A low-key development of 24 apartments arranged in three 2-storey blocks, set in a quiet but sensitive location next to the Grand Union Canal on the edge of Berkhamsted.

The development is arranged with access and car parking to the rear, leaving the canal frontage as an open, communal space and an intrinsically ‘dark area’ in keeping with the exisiting canal environment and the wider River Bulbourne corridor which runs parallel to the canal. The three apartment blocks are linked by screen walls which contain the parking courts, and minimise noise and visual intrusion onto the canalside.  A key objective of the landscape strategy is to foster a natural character adjacent to the canal by planting native species of trees and shrubs, and managing grass areas as meadow so as to enhance their floristic and habitat value. The canal bank itself is reinforced with a geotextile netting to retain the bank whilst protecting the rural setting.

Landscape Perspective developed the landscape strategy for the development in association with the project architects. We also prepared a detailed specification and a 10 year landscape management plan to meet the objectives of the Environment Agency and to discharge the landscape planning conditions.
