The existing Grade 2* listed Bath railway station is being refurbished and extended as part of a new transportation interchange being created in conjunction with the wider redevelopment of the Southgate area of Bath.  Designed by IK Brunel in c.1840 the railway station is an iconic design with a gabled frontage clad in Bath stone, and is the main arrival point for many visitors to Bath.  The refurbishment involves the conversion of a number of arches to the side of the station to restaurants and cafes, and these will open onto a new public square with trees and seating to provide a vibrant and memorable arrival space for visitors.

One of the arches will be kept open to provide an upgraded pedestrian route linking the existing Halfpenny Bridge and the tranquil riverside areas to the south of the station with the bustling shopping streets and the historic city centre to the north.

Work on the project, which is to be run as a traditional contract, is due to commence in 2010.
